"Bedabbled" is the only single on the Off & On album featuring loops. The ostinatos mirror the protagonist's repeated transgressions ― with the quantity accumulating as the protagonist gets deeper and deeper into the broken record of behavior.
This song is also the only one from Off & On to include an overdub of voices ― with the same voice being employed so as to represent the many times the protagonist has ventured down the path in the past (and to indicate the person ultimately most at fault for such frolicking amongst familiar pitfalls is oneself). "Bedabbled" began with the lyrics instead of the music, and is the only song on the album Off & On to originate specifically as a poem. Instrumentation: voice, alto sax, tenor sax, tenor uke, glockenspiel, marimba, tom-toms, rototoms, woodblock Miscellaneous Art Rock Trivia for "Bedabbled": The ukulele functions as the protagonists' footsteps. sound recording personnel:

The moon beckons like a wolf’s howl —
Beset by an eclipse. Wraithlike forms emerge from a rose-colored mist… The sounds and smells all ring a bell — Or so I hear one ring… The mist is unnaturally blushed. A trail of footsteps manifests. Music arises; music arouses — And the silhouettes start to twirl… Stomp to the beat… Soles in the footprints… Vines creep And the clouds bleed… Stomp to the beat. The coral haze corrals. With a taste like cotton candy And a feel like baby oil. The bell tolls. The mist is unnaturally flushed. Lights flash like a disco ball — Gleaming on a treasure chest Brimming with gemstones. Twirl to the beat… Souls in the footprints… Jig with a leap. The casket of jewels — Diamonds and jade. Twirl to the beat. The bell bellows. The mist is unnatural. Move your feet. Stomp to the beat. The coffer’s a coffin but The jig gets down. Twirl to the beat. The jig ain’t up… Twirl to the beat. Fruitless bell… Stomp to the beat. |
