music and lyrics by Bridget Viviani

Bridget once had a fellow songwriter inquire how she
writes music as a drummer, given that he constructs songs via his guitar, and he didn't imagine drums could lend themselves in the like. They can. Though admittedly, that isn't necessarily how Bridget tends to write... But it was how "Empathy" was born, and it's the only song on Off & On to develop as such. (Though others did ensue from doodling on an instrument, like "Slow Burn" on bass.) Another songwriter told her he writes lyrics via sounds emerging from the melody. Bridget didn't initially grasp what he meant, because again, that's not how she tends to write. But it is how she wrote Empathy. Or rather, how "Empathy" wrote itself (with consonants and vowels materializing from the music and manifesting into words). Instrumentation: voice, alto sax, baritone sax, flute, tenor uke, bass uke, drum set, tambourine Miscellaneous Art Rock Trivia for "Empathy": The uke's eighth note chords shift from just down strums, to only up strums, to entwined up-and-down to signify putting oneself in another's shoes. sound recording personnel:

It’s time to realize
That we Don’t gotta fight When No two are exactly alike — Cause we can Empathize; We’ve all been inflamed, Whether or not we’re the same. And it might stupefy, But we Don’t gotta hate When In some way we can still relate — Cause we can Empathize; We’re all thumped by pain, Whether or not we're the same. Unknowns can terrify, But we Can gain insight When we Flood the dark we’re in with light — Cause we can Empathize; We’ve all been afraid, Whether or not we’re the same. |
