"On the Edge" is Off & On's most robust song instrumentation-wise. But though the music may suggest
a more standard composition, mallet percussion and wind instruments supplant keyboard and guitar ― giving rise to an atypical take on a classic format. Animated moments offset with mellow ones to suggest the scope of experiences that ensue from cause and effect ― i.e., the choices one makes and the risks one does or doesn't take ― while time keeps chugging along with its measured meter... Bridget and Matthew experimented with nestling a slide whistle into Matthew's pocket sax to create a slide sax, but ― you win some, you lose some in the game of life... Instrumentation: voice, glockenspiel, marimba, drum set, acoustic bass guitar, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax Miscellaneous Art Rock Trivia for "On the Edge": The drums evoke rat-a-tats of dice knocking about while slides on the bass suggest the ups and downs that result. sound recording personnel:

Back to the bets we hedged,
Back to the summit’s ledge; Back to the stakes we pledged; Back to the water’s edge. Every day is
A roll of the dice… But such Is The nuts and bolts Of life. Table for craps is set;
Wheel’s spinning for roulette; Stay in or get out of bed — Either way, it’ll be dredged… |
