"US" began with 9/11 as its inspiration. From there,
it grew to incorporate concepts from the poem "The New Colossus" (by Emma Lazarus). And from there, it grew further still — encompassing the battles occupants of these lands have had to face and overcome in myriad acts of injustice, discrimination, and even outright terrorism, from both beyond our borders and, too often, from within. To evoke the "Spirit of '76", "Rockyesque" valor of downtrodden but scrappy Americans, the song is arranged and performed as if for and by a pipes and drums band of troopers. The title's properly pronounced as either "ǝs" or "ˌyōōˈes". Instrumentation: voice, tin whistle, flute, snare drums, bass drums, cymbals Miscellaneous Art Rock Trivia for "US": The hi-hat cymbals were detached from their stand and rope was tied in their apertures to create clash cymbals playable with techniques used in marching ensembles. sound recording personnel:

Back of tired and poor
Made strong as steel Refined and forged Feet of tempest-tost Made strong like pines Ground by the frost Mind of liberty Heart of the free Been scoffed and snubbed But rise above Hands of native tribes Made strong as brick Fired or dried Knees of refugees Made strong like oaks Enduring centuries Mind of liberty Heart of the free Been pushed aside But still survive Arms of clustered flocks Made strong as bronze Cast cooled and wrought Gut of Squaws and Coons Micks Spics Dots Wops Heebs Slopes and refuse Mind of liberty Heart of the free Been knocked around But won't stay down |
